Knowing how to hang a shower curtain properly will help keep water from leaking outside of your shower. In addition, properly hanging your shower curtain will keep your shower curtain free from mold and mildew.
How to Hang a Shower Curtain Rod
There are a few considerations regarding the type of shower curtain rod you want before you begin your project.
First, you should consider the type of shower curtain rod that will meet your needs and installation abilities. Shower curtain rods can be straight like a tension shower curtain rod or an attached shower curtain rod. If your shower is small and you want it to have more space, you might consider hanging a curved shower curtain rod.
How To Hang a Tension Shower Curtain Rod
Hanging a tension shower rod is the easiest way to add a shower curtain to your bathroom. Most tension rods easily expand to fit snugly between your shower walls by turning the rod. This type of shower curtain rod requires no screw attachments into your walls. The downside of using this type of rod is that it can be difficult to get enough tension to hold your shower curtain in place and it can loosen over time.
How To Hang a Straight Shower Curtain Rod
- Mark on the wall where you will be mounting the brackets. When possible, mark where you will be drilling holes for the screws. Make sure both mounting brackets are at the same height and in the same respective locations by using a measuring tape.
- Drill pilot holes where you'll be placing the screws when you mount the brackets. If you're installing the curtain rod in drywall, it is advisable to add wall anchors to the pilot holes. Wall anchors are not needed if you are mounting the brackets onto studs.
- Most shower-rod assembly kits will include the mounting hardware, but it is generally a good idea to upgrade to stronger screws.
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installing the shower rod onto the mounting brackets.
How to Install a Curved Shower Curtain Rod
Steps to mounting a curved shower curtain rod are the same as above with the following exception.
A curved shower rod should be mounted approximately 3 inches closer to the opposite shower wall than brackets for a standard rod would be mounted. If you don't compensate for the rod's curve, you won't be able to tuck the ends of the liner into the tub. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the proper placement of your curved shower curtain rod brackets.
How high you mount the rod is mostly a matter of personal preference, but if you don't want your shower curtain to pool on the floor, make sure the rod is at least as high as the length of your curtain plus three inches for curtain rings or hooks.
How to Hang A Shower Curtain
Installing your shower curtain can be completed in just a few quick steps.
- Attach the rings. Use shower curtain hooks to extend the length of your shower curtain by 1 to 3 inches. Standard (single) plastic hooks can provide approximately 1 to 1 1/2 inches of extra length. Longer shower curtain hooks can provide 2 to 3 inches of additional length.
At the Linen Store, we make it easy by offering shower curtains with hooks included:

2. Hang the curtain and liner. Position the curtain and liner so that the holes in each align perfectly from one end to the next. The wrong side of the curtain should face the liner when it hangs from the rod.
We make it easy by offering many waterproof shower curtains that do not require a shower liner:
If you do need a shower liner, the Linen Store offers a top-quality liner at a great price.
3. Finally, attach the hooks by pushing each one through the individual holes in the shower curtain and liner. A standard 72-inch by 72-inch shower curtain should hang with at least 3 to 5 inches of length from the hem of your curtain to your floor.
