30th Mar 2015

For some vacations, packing clothes on hangers makes perfect sense. Packing on hangers helps cut down on the time it takes to unpack because all you do is open your suitcase or garment bag, pull out the clothes, hang them in the closet and you are ready to go.

This technique is especially good for trips where drawer space is tight. When you pack clothes on hangers for a trip, you will always have the hangers you want with you. No more scrounging for hangers when you arrive.

The first step in packing clothes on hangers is selecting the right hangers to use. Use a hanger with a slim design to maximize packing space. For tank tops, dresses, pants, skirts, or jackets, use hangers with non-slip design. Our Mahogany Hanger Set or Slim Velvet Hanger Set are perfect for packing your clothes on hangers.

Regardless of whether you are packing your clothes in a suitcase or a garment bag, make sure that you close all of the garment fasteners. This is to keep the garments secure and prevent wrinkles. Zip the zippers, snap the snaps and button the buttons.

The less items move, the less they will wrinkle. Use the ribbons inside formal pieces to attach them to dress hangers. This prevents stretching from the weight of the clothing pulling against the shoulder straps. This is especially important for gowns with trains, beaded dresses or other heavy items.

For Packing Your Clothes on Hanger To Put In A Suitcase

  1. Place your clothes on the hanger. Make sure your clothes are secure and do not slip on the hanger.
  2. Lay your clothes on a flat surface. Place the hook of the hanger at the edge of a flat surface with the front of your clothes facing down.
  3. Fold your clothes. Gently fold your clothes back over the packing surface, arms folded in and shirttail edges up folded up. Pull the fabric as straight as possible. Carefully, fold your clothes as many times back over as needed to make them fit on the suitcase, pulling out the wrinkles each time. Taking time to fold clothes neatly, without wrinkles, will ensure that your garment will not wrinkle.
  4. Protect from wrinkles. If your clothes are especially wrinkle-prone, consider slipping every other piece inside a plastic dry cleaning bag before laying and folding. Plastic reduces the amount of friction between 2 different type of fabric. The less friction, the less wrinkles.
  5. Pack your clothes. Place folded clothes into your suitcase. Check to see if you can close the suitcase without crushing your folded clothes. Do not over-pack or you will run the risk of getting wrinkles.

For Packing Your Clothes On Hangers to Put In A Garment Bag

Use pant hangers to secure pants or skirts.

  1. Select the correct garment bag. Garment bags come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Garment covers are protective sleeves that preserve an outfit while transporting. Garment bags are more structured and robust, and feature a clamp inside the bag that firmly secures individual hangers, as well as exterior hooks to hang the bag in a closet or on the back of a door upon arrival.
  2. Lay the garment bag on a flat surface. Once you have selected your garment bag, choose a large, flat surface such as a bed or table to lay your garment bag out. Clothing should all be clean, pressed, and ready to wear prior to packing. Save space by hanging several items on each hanger. For example, hang a shirt under a jacket or blazer, with the sleeves of the shirt placed in the sleeves of the jacket. Slide a belt or scarf over the hanger.
  3. Pack your clothes facing the back of the bag. Creases in clothing are more likely to occur on the folded side of the bag. By packing clothing with each item facing the back, the front of each item should stay smooth and wrinkle-free.
  4. Secure your clothing. It is important to secure clothing in the bag, to ensure items don't shift and wrinkle during transport. hangers should be attached in the suiter clip at the top of the bag, to keep items from moving within the bag.
